In 2016, the Boerne Public Library Foundation set out to support those in our community who weren’t going to the library for one reason or another through the Boerne Reads program.  The goal was to provide access to books for children living in poverty and crisis.  We found a greater need than anticipated.  By 2018, we were providing books to several different social services organizations, supporting maternal literacy through education on the importance of reading and working with our school district to engage students to improve reading and writing skills.

We have provided over 30,000 new and gently used books in our community since 2016.  Not only have we distributed books through crisis facilities, we are now able to provide the library with books to give out to children, we created a lending library at Head Start as well as the Boerne Academy and we provide various organizations with books they can give to children as prizes.

In 2020, Boerne Reads became a 501(c)3 organization.  As the need for literacy support grew in the community, it was important for Boerne Reads to be able to grow as well.  We are excited to create more ways to serve our community’s children, one book at a time.

Boerne Reads is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children in Kendall County. This program supports our community through literacy initiatives that strengthen reading skills, provide access to books, educate parents on the importance of reading to their children, and advocate for greater library use. Together, we can work to fight illiteracy and ensure that every child has access to books and literacy programs. Boerne Reads not only shows kids how much fun reading can be, but how important reading is for success in academics and life.
